Viking is a strong and dynamic company – with a growing fleet of more than 80 river vessels and seven ocean-going vessels sailing on over 100 routes around the world. In 2022, our guests will experience all the comfort and elegance of our award-winning fleet with two expedition ships specially built to explore the world's most remote destinations. With a new ship for the Mississippi River, we will also expand our activities to the USA.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITIONAs
an inland waterway skipper or inland navigation captain, you can take on the function of helmsman or 1st officer after 3 to 3.5 years of training.
YOUR TASKS
The training consists of theory and practice. During 14 weeks of school time per year, you will be taught theoretical knowledge of Europe's waterways and gain valuable insights into topics such as safety management, risk assessment, administration and nautical communication in different languages (English, German, French). In addition, you will get to know the specific tasks of a captain. These tasks include, among other things, the control of the ship in different situations and intensive ship simulator training. At the end of your training, you must take a final examination. This is the current status of the training areas. In the course of the training, the expected responsibilities, tasks and duties can be expanded.
SAFETY
- Participation for the perfect cleanliness, hygiene and order on board
- Safety exercises, boat maneuvers
- Safety and compliance with the regulations and laws of inland navigation
- Familiarize yourself with the given guidelines, instructions (Manual Nautical) and laws
DRIVING SPEED
- Handling of a smooth ship operation
- Professional use of all equipment and equipment on board
- On easy routes, learn how to keep a ship on course
- Learn how to moor a ship properly and expertly
- Learn how to design – and secure – a gangway
- Plug-in: Special features of the route traveled such as shoals, bottlenecks, etc.
- Local knowledge: localities, bridges, port, locks
- Support of the captain and officers in the wheelhouse by day and by night
- During manoeuvres / locks, provide the captain with the necessary distance information
- Correct handling and care of the rope / mooring wires
- Ship care: how, where, when may or may not be cleaned
- Preparation for the exterior painting of the ship: rust removal, grinding, priming, pre-painting, lacquer painting
ADMINISTRATION, COMMUNICATION
- Write reports according to the training logbook
- Communication, exchange of information with the parties involved
TRAINING
- Employee training on board
- Attendance at the boating vocational school / driving simulator
- Participation in the annual port preschool course trainings
YOUR PROFILE
- Minimum age 18 years
- EU or Swiss citizenship
- German B1 (B2 is required for the first exam at the end of the 2nd year)
- Good knowledge of English
- Energetic, flexible, reliable and loyal
- Interest in topics such as navigation, environment and tourism

- Implementation of SOP policies, procedures and standards set by management.
- Ensuring an appropriate appearance and clothing in accordance with the updated standards of care.
